Water Leaks Can Be Caused By These Seven Things

September 15, 2023by Five Star Plumbing

The last thing you need in your home is a water leak. Five Star Plumbing advises that there are many things that can go wrong with your plumbing that will create water leaks. We are going to list these things below so you know what to look for.

1. Broken Seals

The seals on the faucets that connect to your household appliances and the seals in the appliances themselves can crack over time and cause water leaks. For example, if the seal around your dishwasher door cracks, you will end up with water on the floor when the dishwasher runs.

2. Clogged Pipes

Clogged pipes in your plumbing system become damaged and eventually burst. You can tell that you have a clogged pipe if you see water damage in your walls, underneath your floor, or in your ceiling. Exterior pipe damage reveals itself by saturating the ground above it.

3. Corroded Pipes

If the plumbing in your home is quite old, it’s a good idea to replace it. Replacing it not only reduces the risk of you having led pipes in the plumbing system but also prevents the pipes from bursting because they are rusted and corroded.

4. Pipe Connectors

As you can imagine, the areas where the plumbing pipes are joined by connectors are the weakest place in your household plumbing system. It is common to get leaks from plumbing pipe joints. Unfortunately, these leaks are often invisible to the naked eye until there is water damage.

5. Water Pressure

High water pressure may feel good on sore muscles but it can damage your plumbing system. If your plumbing system cannot handle the water pressure flowing through it, it will burst. Freezing temperatures can also cause plumbing pipes to burst due to ice expansion inside.

6. Tree Roots

Tree roots can damage your plumbing system, especially the main sewer line or the mainline to your septic system. It’s important to know where your plumbing is underground and to plant trees far away from it so that the roots don’t break the pipes.

7. Loose Bibs

Finally, you have hose bibs outside to which you can screw a garden hose for your watering. These bib connections can get loose and start to drip. Sometimes, it’s hard to catch this plumbing leak because you don’t have your eyes on your garden hoses all the time.
