How Can I Tell if My Main Sewer Line Is Clogged?

September 15, 2023by Five Star Plumbing

Your household’s plumbing system routes into a main sewer line that takes the water and waste into the municipal sewage system. If you don’t take care of your plumbing system, you could end up with a clogged main sewer line. Five Star Plumbing can help if this is the case. Let’s talk about the signs that your main sewer line is clogged below so you know what to look for.

Drains That Aren’t Draining

If the main line is clogged, water will begin to build up inside the plumbing system. Unfortunately, this will cause your drains to drain slowly and eventually not at all. Even if you use drain cleaner in an effort to open up the drains, they will still back up because the problem is further down in the system in the sewage line. No amount of drain cleaner will make your drains drain faster.

Sewage Odors in the Drains

You may also smell sewage odors coming from the drains if the main sewer line is clogged. This is because the sewage is backing up in the plumbing system. Unfortunately, this can create an unpleasant odor in your bathrooms and kitchen. Anywhere where you have drains, the odor will waft out of them and fill the room. Repairing the main line will resolve this problem.

Toilets That Are Gurgling

Another sign that your sewer line is clogged is if your toilets gurgle when you flush them. This is an indication that the water in waste is not flowing freely out of the toilet and into the plumbing system. Again, this waste is eventually routed out of the plumbing system and into the main sewer line. If the line is clogged, the waste will have nowhere to go and your toilets will gurgle.

Water Backing Up in the Shower

The same is true with the shower and tubs. You will notice that the water does not drain out of the shower or the tub as quickly if the sewer line is getting clogged. As with the slow-moving drains, no amount of drain cleaner is going to loosen the drains in the tubs and shower.

Sewage Backing Into the Home

Finally, if the above symptoms of a clogged sewer line are not addressed as soon as possible, you may end up with sewage backing into your home. This can be dangerous because the waste contains bacteria that can make you and your family ill.
