Five Kitchen Trends to Avoid in 2020

September 15, 2023by Five Star Plumbing

In our last blog post, we talked about popular bathroom trends for 2020 but let’s take a different route this time. Let’s head to the kitchen and talk about what is quickly falling out of fashion. As with your bathroom, Five Star Plumbing can help with the plumbing portion of your kitchen remodel. What should you steer clear of this year, however? Here are five unpopular kitchen trends.

White Kitchens

Many people assume that as long as something is white, it will match anything. Well, this might be true, but it’s also boring… and not a good color for the kitchen. Can you say spaghetti sauce, grape juice, and anything other food items that stains? Color is good in a kitchen, especially a kitchen with little ones that spill. Don’t be afraid to add color to your kitchen with cabinets, flooring, paint, or appliances.

Subway Tiles

Way overdone at this point, subway tiles are falling quickly out of fashion. Think outside of the box for your next backsplash, and think about where the backsplash is before deciding on tile color. In keeping with the white theme above, a white backsplash behind your stove will put food splatter on display, but a stone slab that is properly sealed will be eye-catching and hide food stains better.

Pendant Lighting

This was never really attractive in the first place, to be completely honest – at least in our humble opinion. Industrial-style lighting makes a statement, but that statement can be bad in small kitchen spaces or with the wrong pendant-style lights. Don’t let oversized metal lighting be the focal point of your kitchen. Rather, choose track lighting or something smaller to add just the right ambiance.

Pot Racks

The same holds for pot racks. Oversized, clunky, and in the way, 2020 kitchen design is clean and sophisticated, which means there isn’t room for pot racks. Get your pots off the ceiling and back into cupboards, so people see your kitchen and not your old, rusty copper pots and cast-iron skillets. Plus, pot racks make the kitchen look unorganized, contrary to popular belief.

Stainless-Steel Appliances

Say it isn’t so! Well, it is. Not only are stainless-steel appliances way overdone, but they’re also a pain in the behind to keep clean. You don’t want to go back to the olive green and yellow appliances of the 70s; although they do hold a certain yet bizarre charm, there are new finishes on the market that are sleek and give your kitchen a visual boost. They are also easy to keep clean.
