Don’t Let Thanksgiving Become a Plumbing Nightmare

September 15, 2023by Five Star Plumbing

Thanksgiving. Family, friends, football, fun, and tons of food. For many, this holiday is their favorite. You see people you haven’t seen in a year, you eat fantastic food until you burst, and, hopefully, the Cowboys win. Many things can wrong over the Thanksgiving weekend and because you’re pushing your plumbing to the edge with cooking and guests, a plumbing nightmare could be one of those things. San Antonio, TX‘s own Five Star Plumbing can help you avoid a Thanksgiving plumbing nightmare with the following suggestions.

Clogged Drains

Avoid clogged drains, especially in the kitchen sink, by treating the drains before the holiday guests arrive. Pour 1 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of white vinegar down each drain and then plug them. Allow the bubbling solution to sit for 30 minutes, and then pour boiling non-iodized saltwater down each drain. This will free them up so they flow without a hitch and isn’t harmful like chemical drain cleaners.

Clogged Garbage Disposal

Avoid clogging the garbage disposal by remembering garbage disposal etiquette. Even though it’s called the garbage disposal, it isn’t one. Don’t put garbage or food items down the disposal. Place food prep scraps and uneaten food in the trash, and keep in mind that the garbage disposal is only there in case food gets down the drain. Use a drain net to cover the disposal to prevent this from happening.

No Hot Water

If your hot water heater is over six years old, it could be reaching its maximum lifespan. Some hot water heaters last as long as 13 years, but many can start to fail after six years. If you notice your water isn’t getting as hot as it used to and you hear a lot of banging coming from your hot water heater, it could be time to get a new one before the holiday guests arrive. Leaks are also a sign of trouble.

Plugged Toilets

Extra people mean extra toilet usage and this can turn into an overflowing disaster. To help prevent your guests from clogging your toilets, remove non-flushable items such as facial tissue, wipes, and paper towels from the bathrooms. Single-ply toilet paper is less likely to clog your toilet, and if your toilets are old and acting up regularly, consider replacing them now before you have a house full of people.
