Debunking the Most Common Plumbing Myths

September 15, 2023by Five Star Plumbing

In all aspects of our lives, there are “tricks and tips” meant to make our lives easier but are actually nothing more than old wives’ tales. Your home’s plumbing isn’t any different. At Five Star Plumbing, we like to think of these as plumbing myths, and following them may lead to extensive plumbing repairs and costly repair bills. So, before you listen to that trick, Aunt Linda told you about how to save money on your water bill, check out this list of common plumbing myths and never be afraid to give us a call.

Bleach Tablets Will Keep Your Toilet Clean and Fresh

While using a toilet bowl cleaner that contains bleach to scrub your toilet is okay, prolonged exposure to bleach will wreak havoc on your toilet’s components. Bleach-free cleaners are even better. Next time, skip the tablet and stick to a regular cleaning schedule.

Lemon Peels Cure Sink Stink

They do, but if your garbage disposal isn’t as powerful as it used to be, it could lead to clogs. Instead, try pouring 1/2 cup of baking soda into your sink and following it with 1/2 cup of vinegar. It is a great natural cleaner and can even help with minor pipe clogs.

Putting a Brick in Your Toilet Tank Reduces Your Water Bill

Do you want to know a quick way to damage your flapper? By putting a heavy brick in the tank with it. And when your flapper is damaged, you may have to flush more than once, wasting water in the process.

It’s Just a Slow Leak, and It’s Not a Big Deal

Anytime your faucet or pipes are leaking, it should be repaired as soon as possible. Not only do leaks mean water loss, but over an extended period of time, they also cause a lot of wear to your pipes and fixtures. No matter how big or small the leak, remember to call Five Star Plumbing.

Hot Grease is a Liquid, Pour it Down the Drain

Never pour grease or oil of any type down your drain. While it is currently in liquid form, grease will coat your pipes and then dry in place. When that happens, it can lead to clogs, or worse, burst pipes.

When it comes to your plumbing and common plumbing myths, we never recommend that you take chances based on the advice of a well-meaning friend or family member. If you do and end up needing repairs, San Antonio, TX‘s own Five Star Plumbing is just a phone call away.
