Your plumbing is under a lot of stress Thanksgiving Day. It works tirelessly in the kitchen during food prep and cleanup; it works tirelessly in the bathroom with your multitude of guests. Nothing can turn a happy event into an unhappy one quicker than plumbing problems on Thanksgiving Day. Five Star Plumbing offers the following tips to help everyone remain thankful on Thanksgiving.

Leftover Disposal

We talked about what not to put in your garbage disposal in our last blog and the same holds true here. Don’t wash food left on plates and leftovers down the drain. Rather, scrape them into a trash bag or place whatever you can into a compost pile. Too much food down the drain will stuff your pipes as much as you’re stuffed after your wonderful meal.

Drain Screens

Prevent food from unintentionally making its way down the drain with a drain screen or sink strainer as some people call them. We talked about this last time, too. Drain screens trap debris so you can easily dispose of it in the garbage can once you’re done doing the dishes. This avoids clogs. Purchase screens that fit your drains tightly to avoid slippage.

Shower Breaks

If you have guests this Thanksgiving make sure to ask everyone to wait at least 10 minutes between showers. This not only allows hair and soap residue time to makes its way down the drain and through your plumbing system; it also gives your water heater a quick break to heat the water for the next shower. Give your plumbing a quick rest.

Quick Inspection

Another way to prevent plumbing problems on Thanksgiving is to have your plumbing system inspected prior to the big holiday. If it’s been a while since you’ve had a plumbing inspection, now is the time. A professional inspection finds trouble before it becomes an emergency, and you don’t want any emergencies on Thanksgiving.

Don’t DIY It

Finally, unless a Thanksgiving Day plumbing problem is something a quick plunge can fix, don’t attempt to fix issues yourself. Save yourself time, aggravation, and expensive repairs by calling a professional plumber – even on Turkey Day – to address a plumbing problem. A professional can identify and repair things quickly, which gets you back to the festivities.

You can call Five Star Plumbing if you live in San Antonio, TX. We sincerely hope you don’t have to call us and that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day this year!
