Four New Year’s Resolutions to Show Your Household Plumbing Some Love

September 15, 2023by Five Star Plumbing

New Year’s resolutions for your household plumbing? Yes! And these resolutions will show you a little love, too. Your plumbing system is more sensitive than you think, and it can cause you tremendous heartache if you don’t treat it properly. Five Star Plumbing has four New Year’s resolutions for your household plumbing that will benefit it and you.

Treat Your Garbage Disposal Well

We wrote a blog a few posts back about what shouldn’t go down a garbage disposal, so check that out if you want a more comprehensive list. Briefly, your garbage disposal isn’t actually a trash can, even though that’s what its name suggests. Avoid clearing uneaten food off plates into the sink. Rather, place food scraps in the trash, put nets in the drains, and use your garbage disposal only when you absolutely must.

Your Toilet Isn’t a Trash Can

You shouldn’t flush trash down your toilet, either. Its only job is to hold and then remove human waste. Don’t flush cat litter, cotton swabs, facial tissue, hair, unused medication, or even feminine products down the toilet, even if the products say you can. The only thing that should go down the toilet is toilet paper – septic safe if you have a septic tank – and your urine and fecal matter. Sorry to be graphic.

Reduce Water Use

This one is more for you than your plumbing, but resolve to reduce your water usage this year and enjoy the rewards. Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. Take shorter showers and turn off the water between your suds and rinse cycle. Don’t rinse your dishes before placing them in the dishwasher, and determine other ways you can save water. You’ll enjoy water bill savings with this New Year’s resolution.

Update Your Bathroom

This one might require an initial investment, but that investment could save you money in the end. Also, updating your bathroom will fill you with New Year’s joy once the project is done. Replace old fixtures with water-saving ones, such as low-flush toilets and low-pressure faucets. Give your cabinets a new look, or, if you’re on a budget, replace your bathmats and towels for a quick makeover.

If you decide to redo your bathroom in 2020, call Five Star Plumbing in San Antonio, TX. We would be happy to discuss fixture installation with you and inspect your existing plumbing to ensure all is well.
